A Creative, Casual & Cool City Wedding

Back in September 2021, ‘the norm’ was well and truly out of the window for most couples. Kim and Dan fully embraced it, getting married in Nottingham in what I can only describe as a really blimmin cool city wedding. This is the non-traditional, personalisation-packed, ‘your-day-your-way’ vibe inspiration you’ve been looking for…and I was lucky enough to be there and capture the whole thing. When I posted the sneak peeks for this wedding on Instagram the day after, I boldly declared there was a blog coming soon…and here it is! Hang onto your hats because it’s about to get colourful around here.

Kim and Dan’s relationship has always struck me as a little bit special, not least because it started across many miles and involved them flying to see one another for dates. When they eventually moved in together, their first night in the house was like a scene from a film - pizza, fairy lights and blankets in a tent on the living room floor! I say all this to set the scene about the sort of people Kim and Dan are and the relationship they have, which really followed through to their intimate big day shared with their closest family and friends.

A wedding in the cool city of Nottingham

When I asked them to tell me about their plans for their cool city wedding, Kim and Dan ‘just wanted to be married’. They decided on a registry office wedding in Nottingham, with a nearby park for photos…of course, we did the MOST at that park on the day. Kim was rocking her leather jacket, Converse (which she had her friends write messages on before the day!) and bohemian flower crown whilst they popped a bottle of bubbly and hung out in each other’s company. Her dress from Lucy Can’t Dance had the loveliest rusty orange undertones, proving that brides don’t have to wear white! Cool, casual and colourful were truly the headlines of the day.

The cool & casual Nottingham city wedding

After the ceremony, we headed to Cafe Roya in Beeston, which is one of their favourite vegetarian and vegan spots. The vibe throughout the meal was laid back, with what they described as a ‘free-for-all’ on speeches and a well-thought-out playlist to keep up the atmosphere. The intimate nature of Kim and Dan’s cool city wedding was all kinds of fun to photograph, especially with all the sweet personal touches they added to the day. There were favours for the guests to grow their own plants, and even the menu was finalised for them the week before as all ingredients are seasonal at Cafe Roya. This wedding felt so authentic and heartfelt to capture, and as Kim said when I asked her why she chose me ‘it was like reconnecting with a great friend’.

I wasn’t the only one who loved the chilled autumnal atmosphere - Whimsical Wonderland Weddings featured Kim and Dan’s big day, really honing in on how the couple made the whole event really feel like ‘them’. There was a definite bohemian feel to the day, but overwhelmingly Kim and Dan’s creativity and outgoing nature really made it what it was. If you’re loving the idea of a free-spirited, romantic wedding you can check out some of my boho wedding ideas here.
