East Midlands Wedding Venues: Four of the Best for a Sailcloth Marquee Wedding
As a wedding photographer working across the East Midlands, I get asked constantly where couples should have their marquee wedding, and my answer always starts with the same question back to them: what kind of marquee are you picturing? Because not all marquees are equal, and the structure you choose says almost as much about your day as the venue itself.
Sailcloth is the one I keep steering couples towards when budget allows. Unlike a traditional PVC marquee, sailcloth is stretched over timber poles in flowing, tailored peaks, and the canvas itself lets soft, diffused light pour through all day, which means the space barely needs dressing to look extraordinary. It photographs beautifully from midday through to golden hour, and it reads as considered rather than simply decorated. If you want your wedding photographs to have that timeless, slightly cinematic quality, the marquee you choose matters as much as the venue that holds it.
These four East Midlands venues all take a sailcloth marquee beautifully, and I have photographed real weddings at each of them….
Halfmoon Farm, Hambleton
Set in the picture-book village of Hambleton, overlooking Rutland Water, Halfmoon Farm has the kind of quintessential Rutland backdrop that draws couples from London and further afield. There's enough land here for a sailcloth marquee at real scale, and the setting does most of the work for you, chocolate-box village on one side, water views on the other. Many couples marry at a church nearby or opt for a civil ceremony at Normanton Church on Rutland Water, before moving on to Halfmoon Farm for the reception, which gives the day the same sense of place and story that I look for in every wedding I photograph. Exton Estate, Rutland
Exton Estate is where you go if you want your wedding day to feel genuinely grand. The park surrounding Exton Hall, private home to Viscount Campden and his family, gives you one of the most striking backdrops in the county for a sailcloth marquee. You're hiring the land itself here rather than a ready-made venue, and only a handful of weddings take place on the estate each year, which gives the whole thing a real sense of exclusivity. There are two churches on the estate if you'd like a church ceremony, before moving on to the sunken garden and your sailcloth marquee reception, along with the estate's resident swans. Ed's Hilltop Tent, Stamford
A little different from the estate grounds of Halfmoon Farm and Exton, Ed's Hilltop Tent sits in the Gwash Valley just outside Stamford, four acres of family farmland with rolling hills on every side and the kind of sunsets that make the last hour of a wedding day feel like a different event entirely. There's something about the elevation that changes how the light behaves through a sailcloth roof, especially as the sun drops. It suits a couple who wants their wedding to feel a little removed from everything, a private hilltop with only their own guests and the landscape for company. Normanton Park Gardens, Rutland
Normanton Park Gardens rounds out the list, a private countryside estate on the shore of Rutland Water with its own country house and cottages, so the whole wedding weekend can unfold in one place rather than everyone dispersing at the end of the night. The marquee sits with the water in full view, and there's a particular moment as the sun goes down over Rutland Water and the site lights up that I think is one of the best in the county for evening photographs. It's a newer addition to my own portfolio, and one I'd point any couple towards if they want water views with real presence rather than an open field.
